CONNECT TO YOUR KAI - SOURCE
WORKSHOP 2: COOKING IN THE SPIRIT OF KOTAHITANGA
with Kevin Helas

The Wholefood Kitchen is the creation of New Zealand born Kevin Helas, who trained extensively in London under the guidance of some of the worlds’ leading wholefood and macrobiotic chefs. It was at the Concord Institute, under the guidance of Jean Torné and other teachers, that Kevin was first introduced to the principle of ‘cooking with awareness', a powerful way of establishing a deeper connection with ourselves and the world around us, which informs The Wholefood Kitchen ethos.

Workshop 2 (Source) of our Connect to Your Kai series is a hands-on cooking class incorporating wholefood and garden-to-table principles: sourcing, preparing, cooking and sharing food created from fresh, seasonal produce.

Discover how to create balanced, affordable, nourishing meals using seasonal ingredients, pulses, grains, and proteins. This is an invitation to experience the act of cooking as a way to connect with ourselves, with te taiao (the earth) and community.

You will:

  • Learn about sourcing local produce.

  • Boost your confidence, competence, and creativity in the kitchen.

  • Engage with cooking as a practice that nourishes your whole being, and creates wellbeing.

  • Gain practical tips and skills for creating delicious balanced meals for the whole whānau.

  • Come together at the end for a shared meal and chance to reflect on the session.

The Wholefood Kitchen approach is also informed by Mātauranga Māori principles and values, and offers an enquiry into how we can access a lived, embodied experience of these principles by coming together, cooking and sharing food.
