Good funding – philanthropy 101
Event description
“The Australian Funding Landscape” is a series of online workshops delivered by the Research Development Program with the aim of showcasing the diversity of opportunities available to UTS researchers in attracting external research funding.
The series began with an overview session, showcasing the breadth of the research funding landscape in Australia. Six follow-on sessions will follow on from this, each providing detailed insights into each funding opportunity type.
This is the registration page for the on-line, follow-on session ‘Good funding – philanthropy 101' (formerly known as 'Doing good (and getting funded for it) – An Introduction to Philanthropy and Donations’) convened by Jo Degney (UTS Advancement).
More than ever, researchers are compelled to identify diverse sources of funding to support their work. With Category 1 and 2 funding increasingly competitive, how can talented researchers across all levels of academia find the financial support they need to flourish?
One avenue to consider is philanthropy.
Literally meaning ‘love of mankind’, philanthropy is giving money for a purpose or cause benefiting people you may not personally know. Philanthropy has a rich history of supporting research, both in Australia and internationally.
In this seminar, we’ll explore the Australian philanthropic funding landscape – focusing in on the different types of support available and the best channels to access it.
We’ll look at the tools required to be competitive in the philanthropic funding space, and how these tools can be applied to your work.
We’ll explore:
- relationship building, from identification and qualification of potential philanthropic supporters, through to cultivation and stewardship.
- the qualities of a robust philanthropic partnership.
- the different approaches that can be used to engage non-expert audiences, as well as donor-focused communication and the critical role of story-telling.
Participants will hear from UTS academics who’ve successfully pitched for philanthropic funding and discover more about how they can consider philanthropic support as part of their overall funding mix.
We will also go into detail about the expertise available within Faculties and via UTS Advancement to secure philanthropic funding.
Other follow-on session in 'The Australian funding landscape' series include:
- Stepping the Stones – Australian grant opportunities for ECRs and MCRs
- Growing the Pie - International Grant Opportunities'
- Serious Business – Creating Research Investment Opportunities for Industry
- Am I ready for Cat1? – Strategies for success in Nationally Competitive Grants
- Tendering fundamentals
