Community Exchange

Strengthen local systems through fair, reciprocal exchange.

Community Exchange is about how capital moves between people, organisations and places. It includes how communities trade, collaborate and share assets and resources — through markets, partnerships, networks and other exchange mechanisms — to strengthen local systems.

No individual or community thrives in isolation. Exchanging enables goods, services, knowledge, finance and other forms of capital to circulate in ways that increase access, foster innovation and build mutual support. However, not all exchange is equal. The rules, platforms and structures that shape exchange determine whether value is retained locally or extracted elsewhere.

In this session, we explore how communities and collaborators can design exchange systems that create stronger, fairer communities and economies. We examine practical mechanisms and structures that strengthen local circulation and reduce leakage.

The insights from this session are relevant across a wide range of contexts — from strengthening local enterprise ecosystems and supply chains to designing partnership agreements, regional collaborations and cross-sector exchange platforms.

Communities learn how to build and participate in exchange mechanisms that increase local benefit and resilience; enablers learn how to design markets, procurement frameworks and partnership structures that support inclusive and values-aligned exchange.

What will you learn?

In this session, you will:

• Understand what “exchanging capital” means within a Community Capital system — and how exchange differs from investment or redistribution.

• Explore the different forms of capital that are exchanged — financial, built, natural, institutional and social.

• Learn how exchange structures influence who benefits and where value flows.

• Examine practical exchange mechanisms that strengthen local ownership, equity, circulation and collaboration.

• Explore real-world examples of communities and collaborators strengthening exchange.

• Begin applying exchange principles in your own context — whether at a project, organisational or systems level.

By the end of this session, you will have a practical framework for shaping exchange systems that build stronger relationships, retain value locally and contribute to long-term shared wellbeing.

We are currently offering this session free of charge to make Community Capital learning accessible to as many people as possible.

Places are limited to support meaningful participation, interaction and discussion. Early registration is recommended.

Session Delivery

While we will make every effort to proceed as planned, there may be occasions where sessions are rescheduled, modified or unable to proceed. If this occurs, registered participants will be notified and offered access to any future equivalent sessions.
