Framing 101 with Ryann Carey
Event description
Saturday 5/25
12 - 4 PM*
$100**
Ages 18+
About the Course:
This class is designed for both artists and art enthusiasts who want to learn the basics of affordably framing artwork. This class will cover framing artwork created on a flat paper surface vs a canvas. It is not a class to learn the artisan side of framing and so we will not be building the wood frame. Students need to bring a 8" x 10" piece of art with them to frame. Everyone will go home from class with a fully framed piece in a 11" x 14" natural wood frame ready to hang on the wall.
Examples of what will be covered:
- Using a mat cutter
- Staining and wood protection options
- Hinge mounting artwork
- Float mounting (will be covered but will not be the type of mount done for this project)
- Procuring and pricing supplies
- Attaching a dust jacket
- Wiring
*Please note that the instructor is allotting 4 hours for this class but it may not take this length of time. This is the first time offering this class so time length is not certain.
**$30 of tuition goes directly to cover the cost of supplies.
About the Artist: Ryann Carey
A few years ago I took my first painting class and two years ago I painted my first watercolor. I fell in the love with the fluidity of the colors I could produce, colors that I could not necessarily give a precise name to. I also became enamored with the challenges that come with watercolor as a medium. Other mediums allow you to take things back, to cover up mistakes. Watercolor is less forgiving, but interestingly, it frees me from my perfectionist nature. I consider my work exploratory. I don't have a chosen subject matter, though I do go through 'phases'. I am often most inspired driving down the road: by the day fading on the horizon, the reflection of color on the leafless trees, or the early morning fog. One week I may feel inspired by the challenge of re-creating reflections on water and, the next week, by birds and the intricate colors in their feathers. What I strive to capture in my work is the nuance that our eyes pass over. The colors in the shadows, reflections, the clouds. I want to share what I discover from the close observation painting requires. I am captivated by the nuances of color that are seen by the eye but all blurred together until you go to paint it. Painting creates a new relationship for me with the subject matter, one I hope to share with my audience, with the ultimate objective to bring them into that moment or space.
