Description

Girraween BioBlitz – Full Day Threatened Plant Survey

Ready to really sink your teeth into Girraween's incredible plant diversity? Join botanist Paul Donatiu from the Queensland Threatened Plant Network for a full day exploring some of the park's rare and threatened plants.

This is a unique opportunity to spend the day learning from an experienced botanist while searching for rare plants in some of Girraween's most distinctive habitats. We'll focus on finding and identifying threatened species and exploring habitats that are unique to Girraween and its surrounds within Queensland.

Whether you're already passionate about botany or simply keen to learn more about the remarkable plants of the Granite Belt, this is an opportunity to get out into the field, sharpen your identification skills and discover some of the botanical treasures hidden throughout Girraween.

When: Saturday 17 October 2026, 9:30 am–4:30 pm
Leader: Paul Donatiu, Queensland Threatened Plant Network
Meeting point: Mount Norman Day Use Area, accessed from Wallangarra https://maps.app.goo.gl/awrmC7UDoa6qE1BQ8

Please note: If you are attending an early morning survey or camping at the Girraween Camping Area, please allow approximately 30–40 minutes to drive to the Mount Norman Day Use Area.

This is a full-day field survey, so please come prepared for a full day outdoors. Bring plenty of water, as well as your own lunch and snacks. Please wear sturdy, comfortable footwear and dress appropriately for the weather. Early mornings and exposed areas on the Granite Belt can be cold, even in October, so bring warm clothing as well as sun protection.

The survey will involve walking through natural habitats and may include uneven or rocky terrain. Please ensure you are comfortable walking and spending a full day outdoors.

Accommodation: Accommodation is not provided as part of the Girraween BioBlitz. Camping is available at the Girraween Camping Area, but availability is currently limited due to drought conditions, so we recommend booking early. A range of other accommodation options to suit different budgets is available in Stanthorpe and the surrounding area.
