Girraween BioBlitz – Saturday Night Microbat Survey

Join ecologist Elizabeth Williams from BAAM for an evening exploring the fascinating world of Girraween National Park's microbats.

Microbats can be difficult to see, but there are a range of techniques that ecologists can use to discover which species are active in an area. During this survey, we'll combine several of these methods to get an insight into Girraween's nocturnal bat diversity.

Harp traps will be set up before the survey to safely capture bats for examination. Once the evening session begins, Elizabeth will explain how the traps work and discuss the ecology and identification of microbats. We'll then head out for a walk around the area using bat call detectors and spotlighting to search for bats as they become active after dark. At the end of the walk, we'll return to check the harp traps and see what we've captured.

This is a great opportunity to learn how ecologists survey and identify microbats, hear their calls using specialised equipment and discover more about the species that are active around Girraween after sunset.

Please wear sturdy, comfortable footwear and dress appropriately for the weather. Nights on the Granite Belt can be very cold, even in October, so bring plenty of warm clothing. A torch or headlamp is essential, and we recommend bringing spare batteries if needed.

The survey will involve walking through natural areas at night and may include uneven terrain. Please follow the instructions of the event leader, particularly when approaching traps and handling equipment.

Accommodation: Accommodation is not provided as part of the Girraween BioBlitz. Camping is available at the Girraween Camping Area, but availability is currently limited due to drought conditions, so we recommend booking early. A range of other accommodation options to suit different budgets is available in Stanthorpe and the surrounding area.
