Description

Saturday Morning Small Mammal Survey

Join Quoll Society of Australia ecologists Emma Green and Erin Ryan-Rose for a hands-on survey of Girraween National Park’s small mammal community.

These surveys will help us assess the small mammal assemblage of Girraween, giving us a better understanding of which species are present and how they use the park’s different habitats.

Be prepared for native rats and antechinus aplenty (hopefully!) as we check our traps and discover the fascinating small mammals that are often active under the cover of darkness. Emma and Erin will guide participants through the survey process and share their expertise on Girraween’s small mammal fauna.

We may need to car pool a short distance to a second survey location to increase the diversity of habitats sampled and give us the best chance of detecting a range of small mammal species.

When: Saturday 17 October 2026, 6:00–8:30 am

Leaders: Emma Green and Erin Ryan-Rose, Quoll Society of Australia

Meeting point: Girraween Day Use Area. https://maps.app.goo.gl/NcJkrEXaLoejoN9eA

Please wear sturdy, comfortable footwear and dress appropriately for the weather. Early mornings on the Granite Belt can be very cold, even in October, so bring plenty of warm clothing.

The survey will finish at approximately 8:30 am, after which you are welcome to join us for a hot breakfast before taking part in some of the other Girraween BioBlitz activities.

Accommodation: Accommodation is not provided as part of the Girraween BioBlitz. Camping is available at the Girraween Camping Area, but availability is currently limited due to drought conditions, so we recommend booking early. A range of other accommodation options to suit different budgets is available in Stanthorpe and the surrounding area.

Please note that wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed, and the exact survey activities will depend on the animals encountered and field conditions.
