Event description

Embark on a wetlands adventure with this guided tour with experienced Hunter Wetlands Centre Guides.

As we meander through the mangroves out onto Ironbark creek we will learn about the history of our wetlands and the ecology of the Hunter Estuary. While we glide through the Hunter River's secluded creeks and inlets keep your eyes peeled for egrets, kingfishers, osprey and other wetlands wildlife.

After our paddle, we will recharge with a light picnic grazing box of bush tucker and local produce before continuing our tour on foot. We will trek through lush remnant rainforest, past ponds and marshland hearing about the stories behind our 40 years of successful rehabilitation and conservation.

The Hunter Wetlands Centre is a RAMSAR listed site of international importance. With 8 distinct wetlands environments it attracts more than 200 bird species annually including threatened species such as the Black Necked Stork and Magpie Geese. The tranquil waters and trails of our wetlands are a haven for people and wildlife in the heart of Newcastle. This is a rare opportunity to visit parts of the Hunter Wetlands that is only accessible by water.
