Event description
Note: This is an in Person Event Only
- In-Person Location: Ocean Spa NCC, Marine Parade, Napier, New Zealand This location is situated on the site of the former Napier Municipal Baths, near the Napier War Memorial.
About the Event:
The Napier Swimming Club Roll of Honour Unveiling is a significant event scheduled for ANZAC Day 2025, aiming to honor the club members who served in World War I. The Roll of Honour plaque lists 148 club members, including 23 who were killed in action, and is being restored and relocated to Ocean Spa. This new location is particularly meaningful as it is built on the site of the former Napier Municipal Baths, where the plaque was originally displayed. The Ocean Spa is also in close proximity to the Napier War Memorial, which was rededicated in 2023, reinforcing the deep historical connection between the club, the town, and its war memorials.
The event seeks to raise awareness of the historical significance of the plaque, acknowledge the sacrifices of the club’s members, and strengthen the community’s connection to Napier’s past. The unveiling will be a memorable moment for the local community, swimming clubs, and members of the Returned Services Association.
The event ties into the strategic priorities of Napier City Council, such as Places & Spaces, Relationships, and making Napier a destination that celebrates its history. The unveiling will serve as a tribute to the sacrifices made by Napier Swimming Club members during WWI, offering the community a moment to reflect on its shared heritage and commitment to remembrance.
Afterwards PMINZ members are invited to meet for a free coffee and croissant for a networking event and to help determine what future events would be useful for Hawkes Bay.
About the Presenter:
The Mayor of Napier and Deputy Mayor will play key roles in presenting the Napier Swimming Club Roll of Honour Unveiling. The Mayor, representing the city’s leadership, will provide a welcome address and reflect on the historical significance of the plaque and its connection to Napier’s heritage. The Deputy Mayor will join in acknowledging the sacrifices made by the club’s members who served in World War I, emphasizing the community’s shared values of remembrance and honour. Both will highlight the importance of the event in reinforcing community ties and preserving Napier’s rich history for future generations.
