Language and literacy workshops
Event description
Create a toolkit for supporting learners’ language and literacy development.
These workshops will be of benefit to tertiary educators who are interested in practical strategies for teaching and embedding language and literacy.
You can register for each of the workshops individually.
A special rate is available for those who register for all four workshops.

Workshop 1 |Making meaning: Activating background knowledge
Date: Wednesday, 9 July 2025, 12.10pm - 1pm
This workshop focuses on one key reading comprehension strategy, ‘Activating background knowledge’, and how we can support learners to connect their background knowledge, interests and experience with the new learning.
Workshop 2 | Structured literacy: Not just for children
Date: Wednesday, 16 July 2025, 12.10pm - 1pm
This workshop offers an exploration of the key components of literacy teaching and how these can be integrated to ensure learners can build a solid foundation for literacy success.
Workshop 3 | Creating the ‘write’ environment
Date: Wednesday, 23 July 2025, 12.10pm - 1pm
This workshop is designed to equip educators with a good understanding of the writing process and some key aspects of writing instruction, which will foster writing success for learners.
Workshop 4 | Literacy | The LNAAT reading assessment
Date: Wednesday, 30 July 2025, 12.10pm - 1pm
This workshop explores the Literacy and Numeracy for Adults Assessment Tool (LNAAT) in the context of supporting learners’ reading skills. Specifically, it covers how to interpret a learner’s assessment results, and then know what to do to support the learner, and where to find resources.

Billing information
We accept payments by card or by invoice. At checkout you will be able to choose your payment option. Invoices are raised by Massey University on behalf of Ako Aotearoa so please note that there will be a delay between registering for the event and receiving the invoice.
PLEASE NOTE: Invoices are limited to payment from registered tertiary organisations only
If you would like to pay by invoice, before registering, please find out from your finance team:
- the billing address and the email address you would like the invoice sent to.
- whether or not you require a purchase number, if a purchase order number is required, please email accounts@ako.ac.nz after registering with the order number in the subject line.
Registering for others?
If you are registering other people, please make sure to select 'Email tickets to each attendee' on the registration form so that each person receives their unique access to the online course/workshop.
Registrations close two days before the course date.
