Little Green Thumbs
Event description
Little green thumbs
Play, eat, learn and grow!
What: A garden based food education program for lower primary aged children and their families.
When: 4:00 to 5:30 pm Tuesday afternoons throughout term 4.
Cost: $75 per child* (i.e. $6.50 per week + $10 membership). 1 ticket per child (no adult ticket required). Inclusive of afternoon tea, lessons and materials.
* Must be accompanied by an adult who is a member of CCF. Adult participation in afternoon tea by donation. Adults are encouraged to participate.
Typical program:
Play: we will usually start with a few active games. This helps us relax, get to know each other, and enjoy being outdoors.
Eat: after a big day at school and some active play we will all be hungry! Our afternoon tea will be themed to suit the season in the market and at the garden, focussing on fruits, vegetables and healthy treats to match our weekly theme.
Learn: each week will zoom in on a key plant feature or an element of the growing environment. In spring we begin with seeds and shoots, and work through to summer flowers, stopping along the way to talk dirt, wiggly worms and buzzy bees, clean air and sunshine, and water and wetlands.
Grow: through the term we will be building a productive patch of real vegetables and herbs. We will sow seed and seedlings, water, weed, watch, and when the time comes harvest the fruits of our labour. With luck and good conditions, our planting plan will hopefully yield at least a small harvest each week.
Your teacher: Dr Endymion Cooper is a plant scientist, qualified teacher, and enthusiastic gardener.
