Event description

🐚 Marine Fossil Fossick Adventure! 🌊

Find impressive marine fossils just 20 minutes from Melbourne CBD!

Join us for an unforgettable morning exploring Rickett's Point Sanctuary – one of Victoria's most beautiful protected marine sanctuaries. With accessible shallow waters, fascinating fossil formations and abundant tide pools, this special location offers children the perfect introduction to our incredible underwater world.

This adventure is perfect for children aged 4 to 11 years old.

Few people know you can find world-renowned marine fossils so close to the city. These iron-rich fossils are known globally, yet most Melburnians don't even know they exist!

Marine life and fossil discoveries at the Life Rocks Marine Fossil Fossick School Holiday Program.

What awaits you:

Embrace spring by spotting crabs, starfish, black swans, pelicans, or dolphins while discovering ancient marine fossils. Diana, our resident marine archaeologist and fossil expert, will guide your young marine scientists as they:

  • Discover diverse creatures living in rock pools

  • Learn about ancient marine fossils embedded in the rocks

  • Create their own clay fossil impressions to take home

  • Connect with nature through hands-on learning

Nothing beats enjoying sea air outdoors while discovering millions-year-old secrets.

This is a reconstruction of the jaw of a MEGALODON (Otodus megalodon) - one of the largest predators that has EVER LIVED on the planet!) It was created by using fossils found all over the world.

Conservation commitment:

As visitors to this protected sanctuary, all fossils stay where they belong. We'll also collect plastic and litter with tongs – kids love this activity and it helps protect the marine park.

Why this matters:

Early connections with nature support children's physical and emotional development, preparing them for success in school and beyond. Our experienced educators blend scientific discovery, art, and mindfulness for a truly enriching experience.

Rosy cheeks and happy snaps with fossils guaranteed! We're passionate about supporting you in learning about the natural world.

--> Facilitated by experienced Nature Educator Sage.
--> Suitable for children aged 4 to 11 years old and their families (Infants under 14 months free; rock platforms can be slippery for very young siblings).
--> Parents are responsible for their children at all times and are encouraged to participate in the fun!

What to bring:
Reef-safe footwear like gumboots or aqua shoes.

Weather & Event Cancellation Policy: This outdoor program runs in all weather conditions during school holidays. Please dress appropriately for the forecast and bring weather protection as needed. If conditions become unsuitable, we'll move to a covered location when possible.
