MESS Resident's Reveal featuring Tiffany Alwis and Tyler Wilay
Event description
Every year, MESS hosts two extraordinary Melbourne-based artists in a residency program. Throughout 2023, Tiffany Alwis and Tyler Wilay have spent time unearthing new sonic explorations using the vast MESS collection.
This performance sees the residents unveil what they’ve been working on. The show will be followed by a Q&A with the artists hosted by Prudence Rees-Lee.
Tiffany Alwis is a pianist, DJ and producer living in Melbourne, millions of miles away from her hometown of London she still feels the imprint of the rich culture of dance/electronic music she grew up with.
Her recently devised live act (under the name SWORDS) is built with tough breaks and bass to meet the immediacy of a high-spirited dancefloor and contrasts with emotional arcs
of rich sonic textures, lovingly and deliberately tweaked after years working with synthesizers.
Wiradjuri artist, Tyler Wilay, explores experimental process driven performance in a fragmented age of saturated creative content. Through the use of oral storytelling, voice manipulated control voltage, textural spasms & rapidly shifting stylistic elements, Tyler grapples with the intersecting tensions of Aboriginal identity, trauma of Country/Earth systems, the body as a weapon against capital, personal experience within carceral systems as well as a yearning optimism fueled by the impossibly complex nature of the mundane.
