Event description

Returning to Hakatere Marae, a wānanga with Vicky King about the amazing fibre that is found in harakeke: MUKA!

Learn to identify which harakeke (flax) plants are suitable for muka extraction. 

Learn to prepare tools, harvest and prepare harakeke and extract muka.

Learn the uses for this amazing resource. 

Suitable for anyone keen to learn more, you'll need to bring:

  • sharp craft knife

  • scissors

  • strong mussel shells (the farmed mussels are no good).

  • sandpaper (fine grain wood - about 600 grit)

  • cloth

  • cutting board

  • small tarp

  • bucket

  • med size bowl - glass is good. 

Please wear something comfortable and casual. You may get a bit grubby!
