Event description

Older Minds Matter: Online Workshop Series

Session One: The Impact of Mental Illness on the Older Person

Description: Mental illness can have a profound impact on older individuals, affecting their overall well-being and quality of life. Older adults may experience various mental health concerns, and these can exacerbate physical health problems, impair cognitive function, and contribute to a decline in social engagement. The stigma associated with mental health issues may lead to under-diagnosis and under-treatment in this population and older people are less likely to access treatment and support. Untreated mental illness can adversely affect the ability to carry out daily activities, increase the risk of physical health problems, and impact relationships with family and caregivers. Recognising and addressing mental health concerns in older persons is crucial for promoting overall well-being and ensuring a dignified and fulfilling later-life experience.
