Event description
OPEN CHRISTCHURCH 2025: The Observatory & Biological Laboratory (now The Observatory Hotel)
Architects: Benjamin Mountfort, 1896

Another example of Mountfort’s dedicated exploration of the Gothic Revival style, this late-career building was designed to house the equatorial telescope gifted to the College by James Townsend in 1891, and the Biological Laboratory. Spare in detail, with a machicolated tower, what stands today is the result of a complete post-quake rebuild. Please note that this tour also includes the Physics and Biology building. Allow 45min. $5+ BFs.
