Patterson/Sutton Duo
Off the Hook Arts brings the second annual Magic Sunset Series to a close with a truly special evening: the sixth and final concert of the season features the Patterson/Sutton Duo — cellist Kimberly Patterson and guitarist Patrick Sutton — a pairing critics have called nothing short of captivating.
Formed in 2011 as doctoral students at the University of Colorado in Boulder, the Patterson/Sutton Duo has spent over a decade championing the still-blossoming genre of cello and guitar chamber music, and the reviews prove it. BBC Music Magazine praised their sound as "beguiling," while The Strad singled out their playing for its "wit and imagination." Reviewing a Cleveland performance, one critic wrote that the duo's synergy was so captivating that you simply sit back, relax, and let yourself get lost in the music, and Fanfare magazine noted that their playing carries "full-bodied expression that will enchant both lovers of classical chamber music and casual listeners."
Individually, both artists bring extraordinary pedigrees to the stage. Kimberly Patterson has been hailed by the Chicago Sun-Times as a "superb cellist," and holds degrees from the Cleveland Institute of Music, The Juilliard School, and CU Boulder. As Juilliard Global Visiting Artists, the duo has taken their music across the globe — performing and teaching throughout Vietnam, China, Ireland, Hungary, and Slovakia, and even holding a US State Department-funded residency at the Afghanistan National Institute of Music in Kabul.
This is chamber music at its most inventive: two virtuosic voices in true conversation, closing out the Magic Sunset season on a high note.
Settle into the Magic Rat Lounge for one last sunset this season, and let the Patterson/Sutton Duo send it off in style.

About the Artists
Kimberly Patterson is Associate Professor of Cello at the University of Memphis and cellist of the Ceruti Quartet, the university's quartet-in-residence. She was the founding cellist of the Tesla Quartet, winners of the 2012 Fischoff Chamber Music Competition, and has performed in Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall, London's Wigmore Hall, and Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center. Her festival appearances include Verbier, Aspen, Sarasota, and the Miyazaki Festival in Japan, and she has appeared as soloist with the Memphis Symphony, Manila Symphony, and Utah Symphony, among others.
Patrick Sutton began playing guitar at age 11 in Evergreen, Colorado, and has gone on to a career defined by both performance and scholarship. Together with Patterson, he has released two acclaimed studio albums — Cold Dark Matter: Music for Cello & Guitar (2013) and Still Life: Collected Music for Cello and Guitar by Stephen Goss (2020) — and the duo regularly commissions new works, expanding the repertoire for their instrumental pairing. Their research and performances have been featured at the Guitar Foundation of America Convention, the International Guitar Research Center in Surrey, UK, and on NPR's Performance Today, Radio New Zealand, and South Africa's Fine Music Radio
