Queenstown History Walk and Talk
Event description
The night commences at 7pm sharp at the Queenstown Community Hall, 67 Spring St, with a 30 minute walk led by Brian Samuels, and returns there for his Powerpoint presentation on Queenstown’s history. The talk will outline the often little-known history of the area and include material on the nearby Old Port ‘settlement’ – sometimes called ‘Port Misery’ – that predated the 1848 subdivision of the 134 acre (54ha} Section 443 as Queen’s Town by a good few years. Supper will conclude the evening

The Queenstown Church of Christ, 194 Port Rd, c1920. Originally opened in 1879 as the Whittaker Memorial Church of the Primitive Methodists, it was bought by the Church of Christ in 1900 following Methodist Union. (The Union had brought together the Wesleyan, Bible Christian and Primitive Methodist Churches and led to some properties being vacated.) Perhaps its most notable Pastor was William C. Brooker (1875-1947). A keen photographer, he took this photo and many others, of which around 4000 glass plate negatives and lantern slides are in the State Library’s collections. A view showing more of this image is held by the SLSA and available on-line at https://collections.slsa.sa.go...
