Soil Remediation for Native Gardens with Lynn Fang
Event description
With ongoing recovery efforts from the devastating Eaton and Palisades Fires from earlier this year, many are looking for ways to detoxify their native gardens. Various research studies have shown that different types of organic and mineral substrates can help remediate post-fire soils.
Join community soil scientists Lynn Fang, MS and Genesis Sandoval in this online workshop discussing pre-existing factors that have historically contaminated our soils and water runoff systems. Together we'll identify which contaminants are of biggest concern and create an action plan to help restore your native garden's PH and microbial balance.
We’ll learn about a variety of filtration methods, principles of bioremediation, safety equipment, provide examples of substrates, resources for testing, and demonstrate a soil sampling. You'll leave empowered to minimize for post-fire conditions in your home garden.
This class will be held online and recorded. Zoom login instructions will be included in the reminder emails. Registered students will have access to a recording of the class for 2 weeks after the live event.
Lynn Fang, MS (she/her), co-founder of SoilWise, has over 10 years of experience in ecological landscape design, soil science, community composting, and regenerative farming. She centers soil health as the foundation of thriving and abundant gardens. Her teaching and community work include partnerships with LA Compost, Integrative Development Initiative, Arlington Garden, Altadena Community Garden, Cal Poly Pomona, and Pitzer College. Since the fires, Lynn has offered her expertise and experience towards post-fire soil contaminant testing and bioremediation, guided by scientific research, local case studies, experienced practitioners, and scientists in the field. She brings a thoughtful, ecological, and community oriented approach to soil bioremediation.
Genesis Sandoval (she/her) is an urban farmer, bioremediation advocate, and founder of Semillas for Safe Soil—a door-to-door initiative in East LA that gifts free phytoremediation seeds and soil education to community members affected by lead contamination from Exide Technologies. She is a UC Master Gardener, a Theodore Payne Foundation–certified Native Plant Landscaper, and holds an A.S. in Agricultural Plant Science from Pasadena City College. Genesis is continuing her studies at UC Davis in Environmental Toxicology with a focus on Soil Science. Recently, she has been working with SoilWise to conduct soil sampling and provide support to residents affected by the Palisades and Eaton Fires.
