Story Circle Workshop
Event description
In the spirit of egalitarian space and collective consensus of the people, which directs bottom-up organising, I use the Story Circle process. If we include the skills, knowledge and strengths of every person in the under-represented communities we work within, regardless of age, gender, sexuality, class, (dis)ability or education, we can truly support equity-deserving people and communities. The Story Circle allows us to collect ideas and discuss the needs of communities so that everyone can have their concerns, issues, and ideas of rejuvenating and organising suggestions heard. Through this process, we can uncover the issues of the community from the people most affected and then offer the space to agree on how to resolve those issues.
In this workshop, we will practice using Story Circles as a consensus decision-making tool, creating community stories, and as a monitoring, evaluation and learning activity.
Story Circle's emphasis on verbal storytelling can be particularly useful for people who use alternative communication methods and have limited written / literacy skills.
At the end of this workshop, you will
- Understand the ethics and boundaries of 'do no harm' in relation to story circles.
- Be able to develop story questions
- Facilitate story circles in the community
Each participant will receive a workbook with Story Circle theory, facilitation guidance notes and reflective exercises when attending the Story Circle workshop.
Drinks and snacks will be provided. Please bring or purchase your own lunch on the day.
