Event description
Tapestry of Culture - Collagism Workshop: Frida Kahlo Shadow Box Stories – A Personal History in Collage
Step into a world of collage storytelling in this 4-hour immersive Collagism workshop, where you will create a collaged shadow box that captures your personal history. Inspired by the rich tradition of Mexican shadow boxes and the deeply personal portraiture of Frida Kahlo, this workshop invites you to collage and paint a unique three-dimensional artwork using collaged portraiture, interior scenes, and expressive paintwork to reflect your identity, memories, and aesthetics. Whilst it sounds technical no prior skill are required AND you will walk away with your own collaged masterpiece!
Guided by artist Collagism (Holly-Anne Buck), you will explore:
• the art of collage as a form of visual storytelling and portraiture
• how to blend found images, textures, and colours to evoke emotions and history
• techniques for layering portraits and environments within a shadow box format
• the therapeutic and fun art of collage making
No previous art experience is needed—just bring your imagination and personal stories. Whether you want to explore your heritage, create a dreamlike self-portrait, or reimagine your past through surreal imagery, this workshop will give you the tools to bring your story to life in a tangible, dynamic way through collage. We encourage you to bring photos and any materials you would like to include in your collage.
About the artist
Collagism is an Australian multi-media artist known for her colourful surrealistic, thought-provoking works that blur the boundaries between the physical and digital, past, and future. Having lived and worked in Mexico City, she was deeply inspired by the intricate and symbolic nature of Mexican shadow boxes and the raw, expressive self-portraiture of Frida Kahlo, both of which now inform this unique workshop experience. With exhibitions and performances at Tate Britain (London), The National Gallery of Victoria (Melbourne), and Art Athina (Greece), Collagism’s work invites audiences to engage in a visual dialogue of layered narratives and textures.
