In this workshop you will learn how to:

• Select a suitable subject;

• Compose a painting;

• Using layers to create harmony and light;

• Colour mixing the easy way to create continuity and atmosphere.

• Using subtle tonal shifts that will make the painting easy on the eye.

I use step by step demonstrations and will work closely with each student, discussing each step in detail. My aim is to leave students with more ability to go out and create the paintings they would like to.

The materials list is just a guide and not things the students have to have. The most important thing is to have good quality watercolour paper.

This workshop is best suited from intermediate to advanced painters.

About James McKay

James grew up on a farm in Africa where he started painting with watercolour 40 years ago. He moved to make Australia his home in 1999 and immediately fell in love with the Australian landscape. He is captivated by the feeling, soft colours and light of the Australian landscape, and has travelled the country extensively painting and exhibiting.

James is currently living on the Sunshine Coast, teaching workshops and exhibiting his work in galleries country wide. He is largely self taught and enjoys sharing with others the many unusual techniques he has developed over years of trial and error.

James paints mainly with watercolour but also produces beautiful works in oil, acrylic and gouache.

James’s paintings convey a heart warming message and the soft transitions and gentle colours tell a romantic and nostalgic story.

Materials List

• 2 large A1 size sheet of good quality (Arches or Saunders) 300gsm rough or cold pressed watercolour paper (to be cut into smaller pieces) Pads are fine too (A2,A3,A4).

• Sketch book.

• Mop brush with a good point (about as thick as your thumb) Size 20+.

• Small fine pointed synthetic brushes (size 15, 10 and one smaller).

• Watercolour palette - suggested colours, best in tubes: ultramarine blue, cobalt blue, turquoise blue, cadmium yellow, yellow ochre, raw umber, burnt sienna, alizarin crimson, cadmium red.

• 4B and 2B pencil and putty rubber.

• Old hand towel and tissues.

• Small spray bottle and water container.

• Board to work on with something to prop it up at an angle.
