Wild About Waterbirds
Description
Celebrate National Bird Week with this waterbird workshop held in partnership with Hunter Bird Observers Club (HBOC).
We’ll start with a theory presentation in the conference room. Topics include:
What is a waterbird?
Waterbird groups, habitat niches and adaptations.
The Hunter monitoring programs.
How to identify waterbird species.
From there, join us for a guided birdwatching tour. You’ll walk around the ponds in small groups led by expert guides. Spot the birds you’ve been learning about, get new insight into their behaviour and learn about their habitat. You’ll also have a chance to observe birds up close with our telescopes on the deck.

Important information
Please arrive at 8:45 AM for registration so we can start on time.
Wear comfortable walking shoes, sun-smart clothing, hat and sunscreen. Bring a water bottle, raincoat if it's wet and binoculars if you have them, or use ours.
Morning tea is included. Lunch is available in the café after the workshop.

Meet Our Presenters
Andrew McIntyre
Andrew has a lifetime love of birds. His early career was as a forest ecologist working in South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales. Over the course of his career he worked in forest ecology, threatened species and biodiversity conservation. Andrew has a 20 year association with the Hunter, establishing a long term bird monitoring project in the Upper Hunter that continues to this day. Now retired, Andrew is actively renewing his love of bird studies. He is on the HBOC management committee and the co-ordinator for the Club’s research sub-committee.
Louise Williams
Louise is the coordinator of the Ramsar Wetlands Natural Heritage Trust Project for the Hunter Estuary Wetlands and Myall Lakes Ramsar sites. Aside from her work with LLS, she is a PhD candidate at the University of Newcastle. Her thesis is on shorebird foraging ecology and fox predation within the Hunter and Port Stephens estuaries. Louise is President of the Hunter Bird Observers Club.
