Event description

Writing for Children: Picture Books
March 4, March 11, March 18 - 7-8:30pm
Levels: All
Age Group: 18+

Picture books are unique in the world of literature. Picture books are a special combination of words and art. And picture books are meant to read out loud (over and over and over again). Picture book authors do not need to be illustrators, but when creating a picture book, a writer must keep both elements in mind to create the most successful story possible. This workshop will introduce what a picture book is (and isn’t) and help authors draft a picture book manuscript. Workshop participants will read picture books and write their own manuscripts. We will also discuss character, voice, plot, and setting.

By the end of this workshop, participants will know what a picture book is and how it is created, understand the audience versus the market for picture books, and develop compelling characters and plot, and write a picture book draft.
