Overview:
We are offering access to our new Woodturning Studio in the Portobello Tool Library!
What to expect?
During the woodturning studio session you will have access to a dedicated lathe and associated tools.
You will be joined by other members in a friendly space of learning, sharing and practising. You will work on a woodturning project of your own choosing.
If you're looking for some ideas to get started, we have a few examples that the volunteer leading the session will be happy to chat to you about.
Please note:
Our volunteer is on hand to help keep you safe and answer questions, however these sessions are not taught classes and independent work is expected.
🪵 We have some hardwood available by donation. You may need to process this into a suitable blank yourself.
🥽 PPE (woodturning face-shield) is available for all lathe users. Please use this at all times when in front of an operational lathe.
What we expect from you
We expect all members, volunteers and staff to follow and uphold our shared Code of Conduct.
Always ask the lead volunteer if you are unsure of anything, and always listen to them - they’re there to help you.
Follow instructions to use machines safely (this includes always having the face-shield down when using the machine, tying long hair back, not wearing loose clothing or jewellery, and turning the lathe off when not in use).

- Do I need to be a member of ETL before joining a workshop?
Yes, you can sign up or review your membership here.
- Do I need to have attended a class or lathe induction?
In order to attend one of our open woodturning sessions you must have first completed a beginners or intermediate woodturning class with ETL - or if you have previous experience on a lathe, demonstrate your proficiency to the lead volunteer at the start of the session so this can be noted in our records.
- How accessible is the Porty Woodturning Studio
We are committed to continually improving the accessibility of our spaces and invite you to contact us directly on hello@edinburghtoollibrary.org.uk if you would like to discuss specific requirements or need any support planning your visit.
Portobello Tool Library & Woodturning Studio is wheelchair accessible with an accessible toilet, however the lathes themselves are not adjustable height.
Support workers and personal assistants are included within the price of your ticket.
- Can I store my project in the workshop?
Unfortunately we’re not able to store your projects in the workshop. Our community space is shared and used by different groups throughout the week.
Booking Etiquette
We only have a limited number of spaces available each week. To allow all of our members to have equal access to the studio, we may ask you to limit your number of bookings per month - or invite you to join our team of volunteers!
