Comprehensive Bookbinding Workshop with Kathy Burnside

About the Workshop:
Day 1 (Saturday, May 10th) - Introduction to Bookbinding and Basic Structures:
In the first day of this three-day day course, you'll learn a brief history of bookbinding techniques from ancient times to the present day. Throughout the class, there will be hands-on demonstrations of a variety of stitching techniques for signatures, stitched bindings and perfect bindings. You will also learn about book structure and design, from understanding how the weight and texture of papers effect structure and layout of a finished book, and how to layout typography and design a cover.
Day 2 (Saturday, May 17th) - Advanced Bookbinding Techniques:
In the second day of this series, you will learn advanced bookbinding techniques with hands-on practice with Coptic, long-stitch, and Japanese stab bindings with individual guidance from the instructor.
Day 3 (Saturday, May 24th) - Finishing Techniques and Bookbinding Projects:
In this section of the class, you will learn a variety of finishing techniques like embossing, marbling endpapers, and other decorative elements. You will also work with the group on a collaborative bookbinding project and have the opportunity to share finished projects in a show and tell style.

About the Artist: Kathy Burnside
Kathy Shaw Burnside is an artist of many talents. At this time in her journey she's developed from a bookbinding artist into a junk journaling artist. This art form has its roots in bookmaking, and includes recycling and upcycling. The art form encompasses many of the paper arts genres--watercolor, origami, Zentangle, just to name a few. Kathy presently teach classes at Alamance Arts in Alamance County. Kathy is passionate about her art, and this really comes through in her classes. Kathy and Neysa Rojas are the founders of Blue Wagon Studios, LLC and the Eno Arts Mill's BIPOC Artists in Residence for 2025.
