Sat, 26 Apr, 1pm - 4pm ACST

Event description

Using pre-treated fabric and working with a generous selection of home-grown flowers you will create bold and beautiful floral imagery with Pennie from hummingpea

There will be hammers, spoons, and chopping boards on-hand for you to pound / print / press the flowers and leaves onto the fabric.

Firstly, Pennie will guide you through a practice run, to try out these techniques. After that you will move onto new fabric to create your everlasting floral artwork.  Depending on the complexity of your floral designs, you might get to create more than one piece. Once your floral design is complete you will use an embroidery hoop to hand stitch over your design.

Step by step Pennie will show you how to make marks on fabric with thread. At the end of the workshop you will take home one or more floral artworks, framed in an embroidery hoop. You will have learnt flower pounding techniques and will also know how to treat your fabric at home or in your own studio.

About Pennie from hummingpea

Pennie's workshops are participant-focused and involve a lot of chatting about life, as well as the learning of new skills.
For many years Pennie has dabbled in all sorts of textile arts. She has learnt the power of free and tactile expression, and its ability to calm and focus us. This is an inwards focus but also a way towards discovering what deeply matters to us. Pennie uses words, colour and texture to bring meaning to everyday life. More recently she has discovered the energy and life that flowers and nature as a whole offer. Documenting floral colour and texture is both cathartic and important to Pennie.

As a mother, daughter, sister and friend who has lived through many life changes and hardships, she finds that her experiences shape her creative practice and approach to teaching, where she supports her students to discover their own value and worth amidst the daily struggles and joys of their own existence.
