Tatreez Workshop
Event description
Learn the art of Tatreez, Palestinian embroidery with Samar Sammour
Tatreez, a centuries old craft, is a tradition passed down from mother to daughter. Originally practiced in rural communities, women of all ages would gather to share embroidery skills.
It is a tradition that is rooted in community. The techniques have (and continue to) evolved through the decades to reflect the journey of Palestinians.
A traditional Tatreez embroidered dress is inspired by the floral diversity that is distinct to each region of Palestine. These motifs/symbols were used to signal what village or city its wearer belonged to.
Samar's workshop will commence with a meet and greet over delicious Palestinian sweets, desserts, mint tea and Arabic coffee. Then, Samar will introduce us to Tatreez, its history, its evolution and its cultural significance. After this, participants will select their motifs/patterns and using the provided materials to either create their own Tatreez art and/or bookmark with her guidance and teachings.
By the end of the workshop you will have gained an understanding of Tatreez and its cultural significance, a feeling of community and connection to each other, and your own piece of Tatreez embroidery to take home.
About the workshop facilitator
Samar is a second-generation Diaspora Palestinian; she is a mother, healthcare worker and traditional maker. She has practiced Tatreez for over ten years, hosting workshops over the past year. It is very important to Samar to convey Tatreez as something more than beautiful or decorative, but rather something that tells us about Palestinian history and culture.
