Event description

Understanding Hoarding and Squalor

Service providers often encounter challenging situations involving people living in excessive clutter that undermines the functionality, safety and health of their home. Understanding the behaviours and psychology behind hoarding and squalor equips staff and volunteers to be able to build trust and rapport with individuals experiencing hoarding and squalor challenges and prevent further re-traumatisation. This workshop will also provide case scenarios relevant to the aged care sector.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand Hoarding Disorder (HD) and Severe Domestic Squalor (SDS) – including the DSM 5 Diagnostic Criteria
  • Understand the behaviours, psychology and emotional attachments that people with HD and SDS experience.
  • Effectively identify the presence of HD & SDS.
