Kingston Weaving Workshops at Fabrik

Come along to Fabrik during NAIDOC week in July to learn traditional First Nations weaving techniques that incorporate contemporary materials, language and knowledge with First Nations artists and weavers of the Southeast - Suzy, Sonya and Sarah Smith.

Have a yarn and find out about the Kingston Weaving project, and how you can get involved. Kingston Weaving is an ongoing state-wide sculpture project by the artists and Open Space Contemporary Arts (OSCA), currently taking place at Fabrik and other sites across South Australia. Focusing on the cultural representation of animal totems in connection to the local environment, Kingston Weaving will see the creation of a series of large-scale community created sculptures that will premiere in Kingston, Southeast, South Australia as part of the 2026 Nature Festival.  

Here's what you are going to do on the day:

During the workshop Suzy, Sonya and Sarah will show you how to weave the pieces that will become the animal totem exterior cladding (See images below).

This is a great opportunity to get involved and be part of this extraordinary project of enduring cultural significance as it begins to take shape.  

Other things you need to know

• These workshops are free of charge, but registrations are required.

• Both workshops are identical. Please feel free to book into one workshop. Options are: 11am - 1pm or 2-4pm.

• All materials are provided.

• Don't forget your reading glasses if you need them.

• These workshops are suitable for all skill levels, 8 years and older (up to any age). No previous weaving experience required.

• Wear art workshop appropriate clothing.

• Bring your own optional snacks. Tea and coffee provided.

• If your circumstances change and you can no longer attend your workshop, please email nvouis@ahc.sa.gov.au before 5pm, Friday 3 July 2026, so we can offer your place to another member of the community.
