Making Art Like the Masters!
After School Art

Tuesday Afternoons, 3:45-5:00pm (4-weeks per session)
Library Arts Center Studio

Instructor:  Colleen O'Connor
$40 for each four-week session.  Tuition includes all materials.

Lower Elementary:  Suggested Ages: 6-10

Love art and art class and want more of it? Join this after school art group in the classroom studio and get creative with us. Each session has a different to expand exposure and skills with new materials and techniques. Each week will bring a new project and materials to go with it. Learn the techniques of using the materials and the project at hand and dive into your own creative work completing the project with your own creative flair. Leave the studio each week with a new art project as well as new skills and experience with materials. Sign up for sessions that work with your family’s schedule as each four-week session stands alone, or sign up for the whole year for a truly immersive
year of arts in the studio.

Session 1: Master Painters

October 13,  20, 27, November 3
Learn about four painters with very different styles and backgrounds from each other and create your own masterpieces in their style. Come ready to paint and leave with masterpieces of your own. Artists and artwork focus for this four week series includes Monet's gardens, Van Gogh's sunflowers, Seurat’s Picnic painting and Grandma Moses folk art.

Session 2:  Self-Portraits Like a Master

November 10, 17, December 1, 8
Self-portraits Like a Master: Learn about Picasso and Cubism, Arcimboldo's fruit and veggie faces, and art symbolism like Kahlo and Cassatt's family portraits. Create masterpiece portraits and self-portraits of your own in the style of the artist of the week using a variety of beautiful arts materials.

Session 3: Going Places with Multi-Cultural Art

January 5, 12, 19, 26
Going Places with Multi-cultural Art: Over this four-week session, learn about cave art and make your own using charcoals. Explore Native American art and create your own masterpiece with what we learn.  Dive into Aboriginal art and create animal paintings in this style, study African art and create three-dimensional art with African influence.

Session 4: Modern and Abstract Art

February 9, 16, 23, March 2
Learn about modern and abstract art and the artists who made it. Create your own art pieces in the styles of the artists studied, including painting and sculpture!

March 16, 23, 30, April 6

Instructor Spotlight: Colleen O’Connor is a superstar of children’s art teaching in the region. With tons of experience, and loads of kids who love her art classes, we are thrilled to welcome Colleen to the studio for this series. She is currently the art teacher at Richards School in Newport.
