Micro-bat and Nocturnal Insect Survey
Event description
Join local Citizen Scientist Robert Schiller and entomologist Daniel Kurek for an exciting evening exploring Glen Eira’s nocturnal wildlife at Boyd Park, Murrumbeena.
Using a bat detector, Robert will help us listen to the ultrasonic calls of elusive microbats, while Daniel will lead a survey of nocturnal insects attracted by a special entomological light. Learn how to set up your own light sheet, identify local insects, and use the citizen science app iNaturalist to record both wildlife observations and microbat sounds.
This event is a great opportunity to discover and contribute to our understanding of Glen Eira’s nighttime biodiversity during the Great Southern Bioblitz 2025.
What to bring:
A smartphone or tablet with the iNaturalist app installed (we’ll help you get started!)
Water bottle, weather-specific outfits and comfortable shoes for walking outdoors
Can’t attend the walks? No problem — you can explore nature in your own time over the four days and record and submit your observations.
