Repair day- Woollens Mending Workshop
Event description
Join Andrea McFarland, a member of the local Knitters Guild, to learn the foundational mending technique, classic woven darning. Taking a traditional approach using visible mending you will learn about a variety of stitches including stocking stitch, garter stitch, cable fair isle and crochet stitches.
We will cover what can and can't be mended (and why), basic technique of visible and invisible mending followed by a practical component.
Whether you're new to hand-sewing or have tried it before, this workshop will give you the skills to repair small holes and worn spots in your woolly jumpers, scarves, and socks. You’ll learn how to prepare each mend for success, including tips on tensioning, garment care, and how to choose and source the right needles and threads.
What to bring:
Please bring a knitted item with a hole no larger than a 10c coin. Try to avoid very fine knits like merino thermals. Whilst you will have a chance to make a good start on your project, you may not finish it in the allotted time however you will have the skill to continue at home.
All materials are provided, including a colourful selection of mostly reclaimed threads for you to choose from, however you can bring along a thread if you would like a colour match.
