Te Reo Māori Mini Course #1
Event description
Join us in Ashburton's new public library, Te Kete Tuhinga, for 3 x 1.5 hour sessions learning te reo Māori basics with te reo teacher Kate White.
The main aim of this mini course is to build your confidence in pronouncing Māori words correctly.
Content covered through Mini Course # 1 includes;
- pronunciation
- greetings & farewells
- asking & answering about someone's name
- asking & answering how you are feeling
- common words & place names
Classes will be fun, friendly and interactive - suitable for all types of adult learners. You can expect relaxed but organised classes where there may be a little singing, reading and writing but more emphasis on speaking and listening activities. If you have a laptop, tablet or smartphone available for use in class and for small practice tasks at home, you would get more out of the course - but it's not essential.
Registration is required and classes will only commence if minimum numbers are booked in. Please check you can make it to all 3 sessions in this course before signing up. To cater for different needs and schedules we are offering the same course on a Friday morning and a Saturday morning, so register for the day that suits you best. Get tickets on this page for Fridays 9am - 10.30am: Feb 16, Feb 23 and March 1st or head over here to get tickets for Saturdays 10am - 11.30: Feb 17, Feb 24 and March 2nd. Note: A good next step would be mini course #2 Ko Au (on mihi/ pepeha/ whānau) which will run over the 4 Monday afternoons in March (1pm - 2.30pm).
We want to make these mini courses accessible for all, so are proud to offer them for free. For those who would like to contribute to the cost of the training, we also have an option of koha tickets where you choose an amount that feels right to you. Any funds received will go to Connecting Mid Canterbury (the charitable trust behind Keep Learning Mid Canterbury) and will enable the trust to pay the tutor and run more such events in the future.
We welcome Māori and non-Māori from all walks of life - any one who would like to learn & improve their Māori language skills and confidence. Let's learn and practice together in a safe and welcoming space.
Nau mai, haere mai.
