    Event description

    Join us in Ashburton's new public library, Te Kete Tuhinga, for 4 x 1.5 hour te reo Māori sessions each Monday afternoon in March, 1.00 - 2.30pm.

    The aim of this mini course is for you to be able to introduce yourself appropriately and talk about family

    Content covered through Mini Course # 2 'Ko Au' includes;

    • pronunciation
    • understanding pepeha & mihi - tikanga & purpose
    • different introductory structures for Māori and non-Māori
    • introducing yourself in formal and less formal settings
    • key family related words
    • questions & answers about who is who in a whānau
    • introducing others

    Classes will be friendly and interactive - suitable for all types of adult learners. There will be some written activities but the emphasis is on being able to appropriately introduce yourself orally, understand others' introductions and engage in conversations about whānau (family). If you have a laptop, tablet or smartphone available for use in class and for small practice tasks at home, you would get more out of the course - but it's not essential.

    Registration is required and classes will only commence if minimum numbers are booked in. Please check you can make it to all 4 sessions in this course before signing up. The class is suitable for beginners, but if you haven't done any Māori language learning before or struggle with pronunciation, we recommend doing the 3 session Mini course 1 first. Click for details and to register for Fridays 9am - 10.30am from Feb 16  OR Saturdays 10am - 11.30 from Feb 17.

    We want to make these mini courses accessible for all, so are proud to offer them for free. For those who would like to contribute to the cost of the training, we also have an option of koha tickets where you choose an amount that feels right to you. Any funds received will go to Connecting Mid Canterbury (the charitable trust behind Keep Learning Mid Canterbury) and will enable the trust to pay the tutor and run more such events in the future.

    We welcome Māori and non-Māori from all walks of life - any one who would like to learn & improve their Māori language skills and confidence. Let's learn and practice together in a safe and welcoming space.

    Nau mai, haere mai.
