At its completion in 1981, the Gregory Bateson Building was promoted as the most energy-efficient office building in the nation. It is historically significant as an example of 1970s era energy conscious design and associated with progressive environmental policies of California at the time.
Using the Progressive Design Build Delivery method, the California Department of General Services tasked the Bateson Collaborative Team to renovate the building to modern office standards while also providing a high-performance envelope and building systems (tracking LEED Platinum), and compliance under the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation.
The building tour will feature the preservation of character defining features of the central skylit atrium and exterior repair of the precast concrete structure with glass wall infill and glulam wood siding. The team will discuss the experimental and nontraditional building systems and their successes or challenges.
