Walk Specifics

Grade               :   L 34 / M33
Estimated walking time   : 5 hrs
Total of all uphill sections :   50 m
Pace   :    Average
Terrain            :    Parkland, pathway, beach, some sandy tracks, rocky areas.
Vegetation         :    Dune vegetation , scrubby forest, mangroves.

Expect                :    Open sections, some shade, fairly easy walking with some challenges, and about 14 kms if you are completing the entire walk. There is an option to start at Shoal Picnic area and walk to Reliance Creek and back to Shoal Pt picnic area, which would be about 6 km with a grade of M33.  Insects, obstacles and wet shoes are possible. As it is high tide at about 8.30 am, the morning will be spent in parkland, on the pathway, along a road for a while, and climbing staircases and short bush tracks to avoid the wet rocks around the headland. When the tide has ebbed sufficiently, we will walk along the beach.

Please bring: a hat, insect and sun protection, lunch, snacks and plenty of water. Please indicate when you book with me whether you will doing 14 km or 6 km.

Footwear: It is most important that suitable footwear is worn by all participants. For this walk, sneakers with decent tread will be adequate, but anyone with boots with ankle support should wear them. No bare feet, thongs, or beach sandals please. Shoes may get wet as we will have to cross the drainage gutter just north of the Shoal Point picnic ground.

Safety: As a safety measure, there will be a briefing prior to the commencement of the walk. During the walk we need to stay together as a group, and ear buds, music and long mobile phone conversations are not part of our bushwalking culture. There will be no opportunities to swim on this occasion. Because of the distance and a few hazards along the way, this walk is not suitable for family members under 15 years, and those 15-18 years would need a waiver and a responsible adult with them.

Forms: In addition to securing your spot on this walk by selecting 'Get Tickets', we will also need you to complete the membership form via the link below and select 'Day Member' on the form. Northern Beaches Community Week will cover the cost of your day membership so that you can enjoy this experience and what the Mackay Bushwalking Group is all about for FREE. Completed forms can be emailed to nbcweek@gmail.com or brought with you in hardcopy on the day.
